The Golden Garden (Simeon Care for the Elderly)
The project will create a new therapeutic dementia garden for the elderly residents living in Simeon’s care home in Aberdeen.
We are building a new care home opening in spring 2015, but the outdoor space consists of piles of rubble and mud. The garden is anything but golden at the moment and there is heaps of work to do to create a beautiful and meaningful outdoor space around the new home. We know how much our residents enjoy being outdoors, and how important it is for them to have a safe garden area full of interest and inspiration. Dr Garuth Chalfont, creator of therapeutic spaces and dementia gardens, has designed a beautiful south-facing garden especially for us. This will be a space full of interesting paths, leading through several different areas to explore, with cosy seating alcoves to rest in and enjoy the sunshine. As well as a potting shed, there will be wildlife stations and vegetable patches, and room for relatives and friends to join us for outdoor activities. The garden will be a reminder of happy memories, and a place where all our residents can continue to make new discoveries.
