Handfuls of Harmony Choir (South West Bristol Co-operative Learning Trust)
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE
WHO VOTED FOR US ! x
FROM HANDFULS TO A THOUSAND VOICE CHOIR
The People’s Millions fund is essential to help expand our multi-generational choir to everyone within our reach. Singing is food for the soul both for the singers and the audiences and we want develop our work with more schools, local organisations and businesses, residential care homes, youth work provision, arts centres and other creative groups.
To grow our choir (aged from 5 to 105) touching every part of our shared community we plan to run singing workshops in a variety of settings throughout the spring and summer of 2015. The workshops will be open to all and the songs taught by ear, so no music reading skills or previous singing experience is necessary. The workshops will be facilitated by Ali Orbaum (director of Bristol’s Gasworks Choir, MD of Sing for Water West and a Bristol Happiness Champion) with the help of other experienced and inspiring workshop leaders in the Bristol area. We aim to engage 1000 people, many of whom have never been in a choir.
THE CHERRY ON TOP
The project would end with one or more public performances in the mid part of 2015, reaching audiences of possibly thousands in an historic stadium event.
Handfuls of Harmony Choir was created in 2013 by the South Bristol Co-operative Learning Trust to strengthen the collaboration between schools in the area and ensure their valuable assets (buildings and playing fields) remain under the control of local people. The Trust is supported by Bristol City Football Club, UWE, Bristol City Council, the Tobacco Factory and the Co-operative Group. It currently brings together children from Ashton Gate, Ashton Park, Ashton Vale, Compass Point and Luckwell School to sing with parents, grandparents, teachers, school staff and other adults from the wider community. With funding from the People’s Millions we will be able to extend the net and offer hundreds more Bristol folk the chance to engage with the life-affirming experience of singing in harmony.
