For the Young at Heart (Adamsdown Day Centre Partnership)
The project aims to further improve the health and well-being of the older people who come to our Day Centre in Adamsdown, Cardiff. Many who attend have no family members to care for them, many would have no contact with others and if they did not come here, their lives would be very lonely and isolated. As well as providing them with a nutritious meal, we also provide services to enhance their lives, such as a hairdresser, aromatherapy sessions, the services of a chiropodist, weekly exercise classes to assist their mobility and ‘Golden Oldies’ every 4 weeks provide a happy hour of singing and dancing; we must not forget their daily game of bingo too!
Unfortunately the loss of grant funding means that we are now struggling to continue this vital and necessary service for a group of people often overlooked in our Society today. It is essential that we do all we can to ensure that we not only continue our work, but go from strength to strength. I urge you strongly to please support our project and thus help us in our fight to ensure the health and well-being of these older people and also ensure that their long-term independence continues. Many who attend say that it is their only lifeline and a place where they feel safe and loved. As well as all this, we have regular day trips, an annual holiday, regular ‘meals out’ , trips to the theatre and interaction with local school children (this we have found to have a beneficial affect on both the youngsters and the ‘oldies’). It must be emphasised that the The Day Centre has a wonderful relationship with the local community, many of whom are active volunteers. By the end of our project over 100 elderly people will report feeling less isolated and have improved social networks.
