The DSA was established in 2005 by six disabled people who loved sailing at sea and wished to encourage and provide the opportunity for others to enjoy the fun and freedom on sailing. Today, we provide sailing for all ages from 5 to 105 years and through the whole range of people with a disability which include blind, deaf blind, learning difficulties, chronic disabilities and people who are confined to their wheelchairs. We encourage family, friends and carers to join in our activity. All have great fun and participate in the handling of the boat particularly the local children from the SEN school.
Our project ‘Freedom 2’ is to purchase a new specially adapted boat for people with a disability so that they can participate fully in the sailing of her. Wheelchair access via a specially designed ramp will make it accessible to those who are unable to access a hoist making this boat fully inclusive to all disabilities. This project encourages social integration, teamwork, confidence to mix with other disabilities and the volunteers, participate in social events and most of all have fun and freedom in an activity that many believed they were excluded from.
