The Gardens Matter project will create a safe, outdoor space for people with dementia and disabilities in the Great Yarmouth area.

The garden will be located at Independence Matters Community Hub in Suffolk Road, Great Yarmouth and will be specially designed to suit the needs and requirements of those with dementia. As well as offering a quiet spot to sit in the sun, it will be a hands-on environment with an old-fashioned flower garden, vegetable patch and facilities for potting up and growing on plants. By encouraging people to stay active and engaged, the garden will improve health and wellbeing as well as providing opportunities for interaction and reminiscence.

The project will also bring together local residents and community groups, who will be invited to share and enjoy the outdoor space, helping to build closer links with the community, increase understanding of dementia and break down barriers to disability.

Independence Matters is a local organisation, helping vulnerable adults across Norfolk to remain independent and feel a valued part of their community. Our Community Hub in Suffolk Road, Great Yarmouth provides specialist day care for those with dementia and support for adults with learning disabilities, as well as their families and carers.

My dad has a rare strain of dementia that affects young adults: dementia isn't just an illness that affects older people! These guys have been very helpful. Please support them if you can.
