The project will support young people who are homeless or in vulnerable housing situations, with a range of issues such as: mental health problems; low educational achievement; domestic violence; behavioural problems; family breakdown; lack of experience in employment, training or education; stress; anxiety; physical and emotional abuse; substance misuse; and other issues related to living in poverty or on a low income, to prepare them to move into their first home.

This project will help young people get the best from their home by giving them the skills to clean, decorate and carry out minor repairs to properties. We encourage them to help their friends and neighbours do the same through volunteering projects where they can get a qualification. We help young people to help themselves by teaching the skills needed to live safely, confidently and independently in their own home.

The young people we support will be able to access other services offered by re’new, such as: housing support; employment support; education programmes; health and wellbeing support; and a range of recreational and sporting activities that give continued support to young people and enable them to reach their full potential.

A young person’s Story
A care leaver without a support network, found himself living in an ever more desperate situation. He was living on his own in a house that didn’t have a cooker and had been damaged by fire. He didn’t have a job, wasn’t in education and wasn’t receiving the benefits he was entitled to. The bills racked up and his rent arrears grew. His health suffered as a result. He had a history of self-harm and was suffering from depression and agoraphobia. He made a number of attempts to take his own life.
He was referred to Archway by social services who hadn’t been able to help him. Our support worker was able to take the time to encourage him to engage with the services available to him and trust the support that is on offer. We were able to support him to improve his living situation and improve his health. We helped him apply for a charity award to buy a new cooker for his home and secured a discretionary housing benefit award to clear his rent arrears. We supported him to apply for the benefits he is entitled to, including the Personal Independence Payment, ensuring he got them back paid to help pay off his debts.
Working with his doctor, we were able to help him find a volunteering role with his local food bank that is helping him as part of his rehabilitation to overcome depression & agoraphobia. As a result of our work, he is healthier and feeling positive about himself and what he has been able to achieve. He’s very happy that he’s able to give something back to the community through his volunteer work and is more hopeful about his future.
