The Yorkshire Trench (Hull Remembers)

This project, by Hull Remembers & The Hull People’s Memorial team, will result in the construction of a fully accessible trench including a first aid post, dugout, and ancillary areas. Visitors will be welcomed into the gallery, which will include a collection of Great War memorabilia and artefacts, from where their personal Yorkshire Trench Experience will begin. Passing through the gallery, visitors will enter the recruiting area where they can attest (sign-up) for military service ‘for the duration’. Successful volunteers will next pass through to the medical area where they will be assessed for their suitability for frontline service. (Yorkshire Trench volunteers will be required to prove their ability to breath before proceeding.) After being kitted out in an ill-fitting uniform, those who wish to do so can have a souvenir photograph taken in the photographer’s shop before proceeding onward to their first tour of duty on the front line…

The Yorkshire Trench will be made available to schools, colleges, youth groups and members of the general public. It will also be available for theatre and film productions with a seating area which will permit audiences to enjoy their performances. The project will permit teacher training enabling schools to create their own projects in conjunction with our highly-experienced ‘Theatres of War’ team.

Like our pilot-project, The Hull Trench, which has been visited and praised by thousands, The Yorkshire Trench will make the maximum use of recycled materials during the construction phase. This, we have seen, adds greatly to the atmosphere of the trench and saves large quantities of waste wood from the City’s skips and wood-yards. Various local groups will be encouraged to participate in the construction of the trench and many thousands will be able to discover a slice of the Great War, 1914-1918, where their parents, grand parents and even great-great grandparents lived and suffered in the defence of our freedom.

We do remember them…
